Story 52 - College Days
65 years ago the first “C” Day, known as College Day, was held on the University of Nebraska campus. These were informational days first hosted by NHRI and eventually co-sponsored with the University. Organized by the Special Functions Project, they provided high school seniors an opportunity to experience college life and inspire interested students to continue their education. These days also allowed NHRI members to apply project principles. “College Days” is just one more way NHRI’s influence can be found on campus.
Each fall season, Senior Information Days were held on four Saturdays. More than 1,200 high school seniors from the entire state come to the campus for a one day orientation to college life. Each Saturday approximately thirty university-student-volunteers served as guides, handling all of the details from early morning registration through late afternoon discussion groups. It is not the purpose of the Senior Information Days to encourage enrollment at the University, but rather to demonstrate that college life involves much more than football games and social activities. University faculty members and administrators give sample lectures and provide answers to student questions concerning educational requirements and vocational opportunities in their field of interest. Throughout the day the high school students are given an opportunity to examine the University in a critical way from classrooms and laboratories to dormitories and playing fields. Once students are committed to attend the University of Nebraska they attend an in-person orientation session. Every summer, NHRI usually has project members serving as New Student Enrollment Leaders. In 2024, NHRI six members welcomed incoming Huskers to Lincoln. Claire Kelly, JP South Project member shares her experience.
“Serving as an NSE (New Student Enrollment) leader was an experience unlike anything I’ve been a part of. As an NSE leader, you are the first point of contact for incoming students. I had the pleasure of watching their excitement grow throughout the day in their journey to becoming a Husker. Through this experience I was able to apply NHRI concepts like active listening and investment relationships, providing students a safe place to connect and build future relationships. I love seeing my orientation students on campus and hearing about their first semester! Serving as an NSE leader was a gift! ”
NHRI welcomes you back to campus this fall on November 8-9 to celebrate our 75th Anniversary. Join Claire and other NSE leaders on a special NHRI campus tour for our alumni, mentors, mentees and families!
