Story 51 - NHRI: The Matchmaker

College introduces us to a network of friends and acquaintances who can become part of our extended social circle. During these formative years relationships are built and individuals meet others with similar interests and values. NHRI serves as a springboard to develop relationships not only with mentees (formally known as junior counselors) but peer mentors within their own project and other projects throughout the organization.

Over the years, NHRI has been known to change lives, but also serve as a matchmaker. It is no surprise based on the topics discussed in the NHRI Class and how much time you spend together in project meetings, retreats, and NHRI class . NHRI topics include: values, vulnerability, active listening, communication styles … all important topics in any relationship.

A study by The Knot, a wedding planning website, found that 15% of couples met in college, making it one of the more likely places for couples to meet.

On the very first day of the NHRI Class, Dr. Lindsay Hastings explained that many NHRI Senior Counselors end up marrying each other. As a joke, she told us to look around the room; we just might find our future spouse. At the time I laughed. The joke is on us, I guess!

I was asked to do one of the girl interviews after my co-leader Connie Clifton couldn’t be there. Well, the girl HEP counselor I interviewed that spring and I eventually started dating the next fall. We’ve been married for over 50 years now.
