Story 30 - NHRI and our Nation: A Long History of Leaders
Projections, Fall 1979
Current mentors, Andy and Taryn, describe how their NHRI experience impacts being a leader in ASUN
“NHRI has been helpful not only in improving my interpersonal interactions and active listening, but it has also taught me how to take in differing opinions and backgrounds, which is critical in student government. In project meetings, we continually discuss things that went well in mentee meet ups and bounce ideas on what activities can be implemented, which has a similar structure in my meetings through ASUN. Additionally, being in a small group has taught me how to be more vulnerable and passionate about subjects that are not always fun to talk about, which in the context of student government can be a driving factor to turn ideas into actions. NHRI has been a great catalyst in improving my leadership abilities and how to communicate ideas concisely with others!”
“NHRI allows me to build upon my strengths and help other people do the same. I have also learned a lot about interpersonal skills, and these have transferred well to ASUN. For example, NHRI has let me work on my listening skills which has been useful in my participation on the Committee of Fee Allocations. Knowing how to actively listen to other committee members or in meetings has been really useful.”
“I firmly believe that student action and culminating ideas can almost always make a drastic difference, especially in the context of university campuses. ASUN is diverse in its appointed members from differing colleges and interests, so it’s always refreshing to be surrounded by those who want to inflict differing degrees of change throughout campus and in creative ways. Being involved in the Committee for Fee Allocations this year and in Freshman Campus Leadership Associates this past year, my appreciation for ASUN has continued to grow And I don’t foresee it diminishing. NHRI has provided a nuanced form of impact by taking my leadership away from the university and applying it throughout my community, for which I am also grateful!”
“I started my involvement with student government my freshman year through FCLA. In FCLA I learned the importance of having a strong student government. ASUN does so much for the students here at UNL, and I want to be able to make a direct impact on the students here!”
